Article: Strength In Unity

Strength In Unity

From Stickers to Murals:

Sam Lo’s Artistic Journey

Step into the creative world of Sam Lo (@skl0_ | www.sam-lo.com), a Singaporean visual artist whose journey found his beginnings in street art, and has since flourished into a celebrated career. Known for his innovative approach, Sam’s artistry spans from street art to collaborations with major brands and institutions such as The Peranakan Museum, Singapore Art Museum and Nike.

In this exclusive interview, Sam shares his artistic evolution, from experimenting with stickers and typography to creating large-scale murals and immersive installations. He also reflects on the "Strength In Unity" collection and the mural he crafted for Bynd Artisan's 10th Anniversary celebration.

Hi Sam. Thank you for taking the time to speak to us. For those who are not yet familiar with you and your work, could you give us a short self-introduction?
Hi, my name is Sam Lo. I am a visual artist, and I started out with street art.

Tell us about your journey. What drew you into visual art, and how has your approach evolved over the years?
I started getting into visual arts about 14 years ago, initially driven by a curiosity about how street art could impact the masses. I was very drawn to it. Since then, my work has evolved into many murals and public pieces, fuelled by a desire to create works that are inspired by people and made for people.

Interestingly, when I first started out, my work centred around stickers, typography and stencils. Over the years, it has progressed to larger murals and installations. Recently, I completed an installation in the form of an amusement park, which has been one of my biggest undertaking yet. Seeing how my work has evolved from stickers and 2D mediums, and has further expanded into 3D forms, I’m actually really proud of myself for that progress.

What challenges and successes have you encountered on this journey? How have they influenced your vision and practice?
When it comes to challenges, they’ve always been self-motivated in the sense that I’ve constantly pushed myself to the limit with every project. I always strive to keep things exciting by trying something new each time, making it more of a personal challenge. For instance, drawing the straightest line or a perfect circle by hand is something I continually challenge myself to achieve artistically. That’s one of the positive outcomes of my approach — every time I push myself to explore something different, I’m really pleased with the result because I know I’ve grown and can do something new. I’ve turned those challenges into personal rewards. There’s always room for growth, and I truly enjoy that aspect.

What inspired the artwork you created for our “10 Years and Beyond” (10YAB) products? Can you talk about the initial concept, the meaning behind, and how the piece has unfolded?
First and foremost, it celebrates the friendship we have. What I love most about the brand is its enduring legacy through generations. With this piece, I aimed to highlight the community that Bynd Artisan has nurtured and the numerous collaborations that have brought people together. I wanted to showcase that in our collaboration as well.

The tiles symbolise how each piece contributes to building a stronger community, and this symbolism is central to the design. By incorporating the three open books from Bynd Artisan’s logo alongside my artist’s logo within patterns reminiscent of traditional Peranakan tiles, the aim was to reflect our unity. This aspect of the piece feels particularly meaningful to me — it represents a sense of collective strength.

I’m especially drawn to Bynd Artisan’s handmade products. The attention to detail in each piece resonates deeply with me. To me, artistry is so important, and the tactile experience of these products infuses them with life. These pieces were designed to complement everyday life, offering something distinct from my usual work — there’s always room for exploration and growth.

How does the mural for the 10YAB Experience Store relate to the broader themes and messages found in your other works?

The mural I created for Bynd Artisan is deeply inspired by the spirit of community, a theme that resonates in much of my work. My aim with this piece is not only to showcase the heartfelt artistry behind these products, but also to highlight the community that Bynd Artisan represents and brings together. This is something close to my heart, and I am eager to emphasise it in this mural.

While I am often known for creating works that are subversive and a bit tongue-in-cheek, reflecting on these previous projects, I’ve come to recognise that there is so much more to explore in life and the human psyche. As I grow, I’m learning that there’s a wholesome side to my artistry as well. Though I continue to create subversive works, I also want to explore and express this other aspect of myself. This is a dimension of my work that I am excited to delve further into.

We welcome you to visit the 10 Years and Beyond Experience Store to marvel at the stunning mural Sam has brought to life.
