Her creations reflect the grit, resilience and sacrifices that define the creative journey.
In this intimate interview, Pat reflects on her artistic evolution and the key moments that shaped her as a creator. She shares the inspiration behind Blood Sweat Money, a piece for Bynd Artisan’s 10th Anniversary, embodying her journey of hustle, sacrifice, and perseverance while celebrating the shared dedication and resilience between her work and the brand’s legacy.
Can you give us a short introduction of yourself?
I'm Pat Law, a creative who gets off on thoughtful creativity. I am a creative director of GOODSTUPH Singapore.
For nearly two decades, I have paid my dues in the world of advertising, working on brands like Nike, Lego, Meta, MINI and Sephora. Now, I'm returning to my roots, making statements with art. And oh, I'm probably the woman your mother warned you about. Hell, I'm probably the woman my own mother will warn you about.
What is it about your work that excites or drives you the most? What motivates you to keep doing what you do?
It’s the thrill of thoughtful creativity — creating works that make people think, feel, and yes, perhaps even squirm a little — that keeps my fire burning. That said, it does take a certain dose of narcissism and vanity, to yearn to provoke and challenge status quo. If there’s an opportunity for me to challenge something through my creativity, that’s the greatest privilege I could have. I think it’s in my nature to be a bit rebellious and cheeky. Hopefully, I’m now a rebel with a cause, rather than a rebel without one.
If I may, I was at the tender age of six when my kindergarten teacher told me to stand in the corner of the classroom and not talk. I had been talking too much, and disrupting my class. What did I do? I whistled proudly instead. That tells you a bit about my innate personality.
Could you share a personal insight or a defining moment in your career that significantly shaped who you are today?
I have no poetry for you, the only choices I was given as a child were the colours of my cane. Idealism was a luxury I could not afford. In retrospect, my upbringing made me who I am. My creativity is shaped by the environment I grew up in. There is a saying, circumstance reveals character. It’s true, but I also believe that circumstance builds character. When something significant happens, you always have a choice: to act selfishly or to show grace. The choice you make shapes the future you create.
So no, no particular defining moment has significantly shaped me into who I am today. Rather, I am a product of the collective impact of all my memories and moments—feelings, thoughts, opinions and values. For all the blood, sweat and tears I have poured out, they have gifted me a life of true richness.
Outside of your professional work, what passions or hobbies do you have that people might not know about?
I’m a dog sitter with a five-star rating on Pawshake, a pet-sitting platform. Haha. Until 2022, I’ve always been a dog human, but at this current juncture, I’m not emotionally nor mentally ready for one of my own yet, so dog-sitting is perfect. My dogs go to work with me, attend meetings and sit on my colleagues’ laps and all… so yeah, best side-hustle ever.
I’ve also taken up illustration on Procreate of late. I went to art school when I was young, and was trained in the foundations of traditional art. So while I can draw more than a stick man, my specialty was watercolour. It’s a whole new ball game on an iPad. It has been humbling being a student again. When I first started learning, I was going about in my agency asking my young creatives, “Why can’t I colourdrop?!”. It’s such an exhilarating feeling, gaining new skills. To quote Gandhi, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
You created an artwork for Bynd Artisan’s 10th Anniversary called “Blood Sweat Money.” Could you tell us more about it? What is the underlying meaning, theme and inspiration behind this piece?
“血汗钱” (“Blood Sweat Money”) is a tribute to the relentless hustle, the sacrifices, and the unwavering dedication that go into building something truly extraordinary. When I created this piece for Bynd Artisan’s 10th Anniversary, I wanted to honour not only my own journey but also the incredible story of Bynd Artisan — a brand that, spans over three generations, has poured its blood, sweat, and tears into crafting excellence for over a decade.
"Blood Sweat Money” merges my love for words, typography and design into a singular expression of what it means to chase success. It's a story you can hold in your hands.
When I created this piece, I wanted it to reflect the duality of my own identity as well. The Chinese characters on the outside and English words on the inside aren’t just a design choice — it’s a deliberate nod to the two worlds I straddle every day. It’s a reminder of where I come from and where I’m going — a blend of tradition and modernity, East and West. In Chinese, 'Water'—represented by droplets in the artwork—is a fundamental source of life. The three droplets on the character '血' ('Blood') symbolise blood, sweat, and tears, each a source of life. These droplets also represent the generations of Bynd Artisan, with each drop signifying a chapter in the brand’s legacy.
“For all the blood, sweat and tears I have poured out, they’ve gifted me a life of true richness.”
This sums up the essence of the artwork. It’s a celebration of the grind and a recognition of the wealth that comes not just in material terms, but in the strength, resilience and wisdom gained along the way. I want people to see "Blood Sweat Money” not just as a pouch, but as a piece of their own stories. The duality, the typography, the design — they come together to remind everyone that their journey is rich, that every drop of blood, sweat, and tears has meaning.
Take it home and let it inspire you.
